Consumer Cable Modem FAQ's
What is a MCNS compliant cable modem?
- A cable modem is a device that hooks up to your computer and instead of getting an internet
connection through your telephone wire (or another system), you get a connection through
your cable network (same place your cable TV connection comes from). The bandwidth is
much bigger in your cable network and allows you to get information from the internet at much
faster speeds. And do not worry, installation is done by your cable operator or computer store.
How can I as a consumer get an Cable Modem and sign up for the high-speed cable
modem service?
- TurboComm currently sells their Cable Modems directly to cable operators. They in turn
supply them to you. They either lease the cable modem in their monthly high-speed data
service fee or give you the option to purchase the modem. Please contact your local cable
operator to see if they offer the service in your area and reference our list of commercially
deployed areas.
What equipment do I need to use an Cable Modem?
- A cable operator that provides the high-speed data service
- A Computer (our Cable Modem is platform independent so it does not matter what kind)
- A standard 10BaseT Ethernet connection (installed by your cable operator)
Can I still watch cable TV while using my Cable Modem?
- Yes, you cable wire is split at your home so both may be used at the same time.
Can I have cable modem service but not subscribe to cable TV?
- Yes, you may have one, or both.
How much faster is an Cable Modem connection than other internet connections.
- Please refer to How Fast?
How long does it take to log on?
- Your Cable Modem is always on, a connection is always open, so you never have to wait for
a slow log on procedure.
If I call my cable operator and they say they do not offer high-speed cable modem
service, what can I do?
