Varathane

Premium Wood Conditioner is a high solids,

oil-based wood conditioner designed to penetrate deeply

into wood to provide a more even color and better stain

control for all wood projects. Use on wood furniture,

cabinets, doors and trim, floors and paneling. For interior

use only.

.PRODUCT APPLICATION .

SURFACE PREPARATION

Previously Finished Surfaces – Remove the old coating

by sanding or stripping to bare wood. To prepare bare

wood for conditioning, begin by sanding in the direction of

the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress

though #150, #180 and #220 grits.

Before conditioning the wood, remove all sanding dust

using a vacuum, tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral

spirits. Make sure the wood surface is dry, clean, and free

of dirt and dust. Remove any grease or glue with a rag

dampened with mineral spirits.

WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you

may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO

LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS

BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.

PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID

EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to

control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA

vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to

protect yourself and your family by contacting the National

Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to

www.epa.gov/lead.

PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .

APPLICATION

Use only when air (ambient) temperature is between 55-

90°F (13-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. Stir

the contents thoroughly before use. Apply with a brush or

clean, lint-free cloth. Apply the conditioner across the grain

until the wood is saturated on top. Wipe the excess wood

conditioner off in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let

the conditioner dry before wiping off the excess. Allow the

conditioner to penetrate for 30 minutes before staining.

PROTECTING THE WOOD

Note: Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner is not

recommended for use with water-based stains.

DRY AND RECOAT TIMES

Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative

humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to

the touch in 1-2 hours, dries to handle in 4-6 hours and

can be recoated in 30 minutes.

CLEAN UP

Clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits

or paint thinner.
