.PRODUCT APPLICATION .
SURFACE PREPARATION
On previously finished wood surfaces, remove any
existing coatings using sandpaper or stripper. Prepare
bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the
grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress
through #150, #180 and #220 grits. Remove all sanding
dust with a vacuum or clean rag dampened with mineral
spirits. Soft woods such as pine, fir and maple require a
wood conditioner. Use Varathane Premium Wood
Conditioner before staining.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To
test, apply stain in an inconspicuous area. When testing
on soft woods, be sure to sand and condition the test area
first.
APPLICATION
Use adequate ventilation at all times. Remove the cap by
squeezing the indented sides and pulling. When using for
the first time, remove the entire plastic tip and peel off the
seal on the tube opening. Then tightly screw the plastic
dispenser tip back onto the tube. To begin staining, twist
open the top of the dispensing tip. Gently squeeze the
tube to apply the stain on the wood, or directly onto a
clean, lint-free rag. Apply an amount the size of a quarter
to determine how much stain is required for the rest of the
project. Using the rag, wipe the stain into the wood in
approximately 1 square foot increments, going with the
grain to even out color. If there is any excess, let stand for
2 to 5 minutes, then wipe off in the direction of the grain. If
needed, additional stain can be applied to even out color.
If desired, stain can be recoated after 20 minutes.
DRY TIME
Allow stain to dry a minimum of 2 hours before top coating
with either an oil or water based finish. Stain will be dry to
touch in 45 minutes. Dry times may be affected by
temperature, humidity and ventilation.
PROTECTING YOUR PROJECT
Use Varathane Interior Polyurethane to protect your
project. Allow Varathane Tube Wood Stains to dry a
minimum of 2 hours before applying an oil-based or water-
based finish.
