.PRODUCT APPLICATION .
SURFACE PREPARATION
Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or paint
stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the
direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and
progress though #150, #180 and #220 grits. Before
staining, remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum
and grease or glue with a clean rag dampened with
mineral spirits.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to

PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To
test, apply the stain in an inconspicuous area.
STAIN APPLICATION
Apply when temperatures are between 60-90°F (16-38°C)
and the relative humidity is below 85%. Allow longer dry
times for damp, humid days. Use adequate ventilation at
all times. Use full strength. Do not dilute. Stir or shake the
container thoroughly before and occasionally during use.
Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before
proceeding with the entire job. Apply one coat of stain
liberally with a good quality brush or clean lint free rag.
Allow to penetrate for 5-10 minutes then remove excess
by wiping with a rag in the direction of the grain. Removal
of all excess material is essential to ensure proper dry
time and proper adhesion of topcoat.
PROTECTING THE WOOD
To provide long term protection and durability, the project
should be topcoated with Varathane Polyurethane.
Polyurethane can be applied within 1 hour of applying the
stain. Darker colors may require a slightly longer dry time.
CLEAN UP
Clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits.
DISPOSAL
Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused
contents in accordance with local, state and federal
regulations.
