DESCRIPTION AND USES
Varathane
®
Water-Based One-Step Stain & Spar Urethane
is the ultimate product for staining and finishing outdoor
furniture with ease. Stain & Spar enables you to apply both
stain and spar urethane in one simple step with the ease of
soap and water clean-up. Having a fast dry time and giving
off low odor, this product makes it easy to finish projects
quickly. Achieve a deep, rich color from a premium
formulation that gives a semi-gloss finish to protect from the
elements.
For Exterior wood surfaces. Ideal for: railing, furniture, trim,
boats (above the waterline).
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR: Decks or high traffic areas,
siding, or rough-sawn surfaces.
NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT INTENDED FOR
INTERIOR SURFACES (except window trim). For interior
products use Varathane One Step Stain & Polyurethane.

PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
All Surfaces - Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of wax,
grease, oil, shellac, lacquer, mildew, polishes, and any other
existing finishes. Remove wax with a with wax stripper,
shellac with a paint thinner, mildew with a solution of up to
10% household bleach and tap water, and any other existing
finish with sandpaper or stripper. Old finishes in poor
condition must be removed.
Bare or Unfinished Wood - Remove any existing finishes
with sandpaper or stripper. Prepare bare wood for product
application by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin
with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180
and #220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust, dirt,
grease, or glue with a vacuum or clean rag dampened with
mineral spirits.
Wood with Existing Urethane Finish – Lightly sand
existing finish with #320 grit sandpaper to encourage
adhesion. Remove all dust with a vacuum or clean lint-free
rag.

WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE.
Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure.
Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop.

TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test Varathane Stain & Spar Urethane to verify the
desired color. To test, apply in an inconspicuous area. For a
deeper color, additional coats may be applied.
APPLICATION
Stir the contents thoroughly before use. Do not shake. Use
adequate ventilation at all times. Apply only when air
(ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and the
relative humidity is below 85%. Apply with a high-quality
synthetic bristle brush or foam brush in the direction of the
grain. Apply in a thin coat until a uniform film has been
achieved. To prevent brush marks, avoid excessive brushing.
Some grain raise may occur. Additional coats can be applied
with one hour dry time between coats. Lightly sand between
coats with #320 grit sandpaper. Remove all sanding dust
before applying additional coats.
DRY TIME
Dry times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Dry
times may be affected by temperature, humidity, and
ventilation. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to
the touch in 1 hour and can be recoated after 1 hour. Allow 24
hours to fully dry.
CLEAN-UP
Clean up tools and equipment with soap and water.
