Switching off the engine
When you switch off, f ans in the e ngine
compa rtment ma y c on tinue running f or a time
to cool the engine.
If the en gine temperature is very high, e.g.
after driving in mountainous terrain: allow the
engine to idle f or approximately tw o minutes
in orde r to pre vent heat ac cumulation.
Save energy more miles
Please observe the running-in hints on the
previou s pa ge and the tips for energy saving
on the following pages.
Good, tec hnic ally correct and economical
driving ensures maximum durability and
performan ce for you r vehicle.
Overrun
The fue l supply is automatically shut of f
during overrun, e.g. when the vehicle is being
driven down long gradients or when braking.
To enable the overrun cut-off to take effect,
do not acce le ra te during overrun and, if in
manual transmission mode, do not de-clutch.
To pre vent da mage to t he c ata lytic co nvert er,
overrun c ut-off is temporarily de activate d
when the catalytic converter temperature is
high.
En gi ne rp m
Drive in a favoura ble engine speed range
under all driving conditions.
Drive in a low engine speed range for each
gear as much as possible.
Warming up
Do not allow the engine to "tick over" when
started f rom c old. Speed should be mode rate
until the e ngine h as rea ched operating
temperature.
Following a cold start, automa tic
transmissions do not shift into the higher
gea rs un til a f airly hig h engine speed has been
re ach ed. This ensures that the ca talytic
converter qu ickly atta ins the temperature
re quired for optimum pollutant redu ction.
Correct gear selection
Do not ra ce you r engine whilst in ne ut ral or
with a low gear selected. Driving too fast in
individual gears as well as stop- and-go traffic
increases engine we ar a nd fuel c onsumption.
Change down
When decreasing speed, shift down into the
next lowe st gear. Do not slip the clutch with a
high-revving engine. This is especially
important wh en hill climbing.
Clut ch operation
Always de press the clutch pedal hard to the
floor to prevent shifting difficulties and
transmission damage.
When driving do not use the pedal as a foot
rest; this will cause substantial clutch wear.
Pedals
Do not plac e an y objec ts in the f oot well
which could slip under the pedals and inhibit
the peda l travel.
To en sure the pedal travel is uninhibited, there
must be no mats in the are a of the pedals.
Battery care w hil st drivin g
When driving slowly or when the vehicle is
stationary, e.g. in slow urban traffic, stop-
and-go t ra ffic or traffic ja ms, turn off all
unnecessary electrica l loads where possible
(e .g. he ated rear window, heate d seats 3).
When starting the e ngine, depress the clutch
pedal so that transmission resistance is
eliminated an d the starter motor an d battery
are relieve d.
