z Do not disc on nec t t he dischar ged battery
from the vehicle .
z Switch off all unnecessary elec trical
consumers.
z Do not lean ove r the battery during jump
starting.
z Do not allow the terminals of one lead to
touch those of the other lead.
z Apply the hand bra ke. S et the gear shift
lever to neutral (automatic transmission 3:
set selector lever to P).
The ma in fuse box is located above the
battery. To open battery cover remove main
fuse box: disengage cove r by catch 1, open
it 2 and lift out main fuse box 3.
Connect the le ads in the order shown in the
illustration:
1. Connect one end of the first jump lead
tothe positive terminal 1 of the battery pro-
viding the jump start (identified by "+" sign
on battery case or t erminal).
2. Connect the other end of this lead to the
positive terminal 2 of the discharged
battery ("+" sign).
3. C onnect the f irst end of the othe r jump lea d
to the negative terminal 3 of the battery
providing the start ("-" sign).
4. Connect the other end of the second ju mp
lead 4 to ground on t he other vehicle, e.g.
engine block or screw connection in the
engine suspension.
z Do not connect leads to negative terminal
of discharged battery!
z The conne ction point should be as far away
from the discharged battery as possible.
z Route the le ads so that they cannot ca tch
on rotating parts in the engine
compartme nt.
z The engine of the vehicle providing the
jump start can be allowed to run during
starting. Attempts to start the en gine of the
vehicle with the discharged battery should
be made a t intervals of on e minute and
should not last longer than 15 seconds.
After starting, allow both engines to idle for
approx. 3 minutes w ith the leads still
conne ct ed.
z In orde r to avoid excess voltage in the
electrical system, before removing a lead,
switch on a n ele ctrical load (e. g. light,
heated rear window) in the vehicle receiving
the jump start.
z Reve rse above sequenc e ex actly when
removing leads.
