Information on ACEA classifications
The Association des Constructeurs
Européens d'Automobiles classifies engine
oils according to their pe rformance (quality).
Each ca te gory is given letters and numbe rs,
e. g. A3:
The le tter indicates the field of applic ation:
A = Petrol engines in passenger cars
B = Die sel engines in pa ssenger ca rs
E = Die sel en gines in truck s
The number shows the quality in numerically
ascending order.
Information on SAE classifications
Engine and transmission oils a re classified by
th e Society of Automobile Engineers based
on their viscosity. Viscosity is the measure of
internal friction of the oil in flux, dependent on
its temperature.
The SA E classification does not provide
information on the quality of the oil; it merely
in d ic ate s th e r an ge o f ap p l ic at io n of th e o i l
depe ndent on the outside temperature – see
diag r am .
Do not switch to a diff erent viscosity in the
event of brie f temperature fluctuat ions.
A = SAE classes for petrol engines
B = SAE classes for diesel e ngines
