Saving fuel
En ergy-conscio us drivin g
z High fuel consumption is often a result of
failing to d rive in an energy-conscious
manner.
z You should therefore drive with energy in
mind "more miles with less fuel".
Fuel consumption depends to a great
extent on your own personal driving style.
The following hints are intended to help
you cons um e fuel at a rate tha t is a s clos e
as possible to the specified levels, see
page 252.
Check your vehicles fuel consumption
every time you refuel. This facilitates early
detection of any irregularities causing
increased fuel consumption.
War min g up
z Driving at full throttle or idling while the
eng ine is still cold inc reases engine w ear
and fuel consumption.
z Drive off immediately after starting.
Warm up the engine by running it at
moderate engine speeds.
Un if or m spee d
z Hectic driving significantly increases fuel
consumption.
z Do not accelerate and brake
unnecessarily.
Drive as often as possible in top gear.
The vehicle can often be driven in
4th or 5th gear from a speed of
30 mph (50 km/h) in urban traffic.
In fourth gear fuel consumption in the 30
to 50 mph (50 to 80 km/h) range is
around 25 % low er than in third gear.
In the 44 to 55 mph (70 to 90 km/h)
range, fuel consumption in fifth gear is
roughly 15 % lower than in fourth gear.
Select the next higher gear as soon as
possible, and only change d ow n when
the engine is no longer running perfectly
smoothly.
Idlin g
z The engine also consumes fuel when
idling .
z If you have to wait for more than one
minute, it is worthwhile switching off the
engine. Five minutes of idling
corresponds to ap proximately 0.6 mile
(1km) of driving.
Ove rru n 3
z The fuel supply is automatically cut off
during overrun, e.g. when the vehicle is
being d riven down long grad ients or
when braking, see page 161.
z To enable the overrun cut-off to take
effect and save fuel, during overrun do
not accelerate a nd if in manual
tra nsmission mode do not declutch.
Correct gear selection
z High revs increa se engine wear and fuel
consumption.
z Do not race your engine. Avoid driving at
hig h en gin e s pe eds .
Making use of the tachometer helps to
save fuel. Drive in a low eng ine speed
rang e for each gea r as much as possible
with un ifo r m e n gine s pee ds .
