HDMI consumer electronics control (CEC) is a feature of the
HDMI connection that your TV can use to send commands to
Blu-ray™ and DVD players. Manufacturers of televisions use
different names for HDMI CEC. For example, Samsung call it
“Anynet+”, but Sony call it “BRAVIA Link” or “BRAVIA Sync”.
Each TV remote is slightly different, but usually you can use the
arrow keys to select items on the OSMC menus, the “enter” or
selection button to “click” items, and the “exit” or “back”
button to return to the previous screen. If your remote includes
multimedia navigation buttons (play, stop, fast-forward, and
rewind) then you can use these when you play a media file.
Controlling OSMC from Smartphone and Tablet Apps
There is a range of apps available for mobile platforms, including
iOS and Android. You can use these apps to control OSMC from
your smartphone or tablet. In your device’s app store, look for
apps that are intended for use with “XBMC”, “Kodi”, or
“OSMC”.
Most mobile apps talk to OSMC using the web server interface.
To add your Pi to the app, enter its IP address and specify HTTP
port 80.
Controlling OSMC with USB IR Remote Controls
If your TV does not support HDMI CEC and you do not want to
use a smartphone or tablet to control OSMC, you can buy
infrared (IR) remote controls that you can use with the Pi.
The Raspberry Pi does not have a built-in IR receiver, so you
need to buy a control that comes with its own USB receiver
dongle. You can find a list of devices that are known to work with
the Pi at http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals
