Installing Smoke Detectors
Followtheguidelinesbelowwheninstallingsmokealarms/detectors(fromtheNationalFireProtection
Associationwebsite:nfpa.org).
l Choosesmokealarmsthathavethelabelofarecognizedtestinglaboratory.
l Installsmokealarmsinsideeachbedroom,outsideeachsleepingareaandoneverylevelofthehome,
includingthebasement.
l Onlevelswithoutbedrooms,installalarmsinthelivingroom(ordenorfamilyroom)ornearthestairwayto
theupperlevel,orinbothlocations.
l Smokealarmsinstalledinthebasementshouldbeinstalledontheceilingatthebottomofthestairs
leadingtothenextlevel.
l Smokealarmsshouldbeinstalledatleast10feet(3meters)fromacookingappliancetominimizefalse
alarmswhencooking.
l Mountsmokealarmshighonwallsorceilings(remember,smokerises).Wall-mountedalarmsshouldbe
installednotmorethan12inchesawayfromtheceiling(tothetopofthealarm).
l Ifyouhaveceilingsthatarepitched,installthealarmwithin3feetofthepeakbutnotwithintheapexofthe
peak(fourinchesdownfromthepeak)
l Don'tinstallsmokealarmsnearwindows,doors,orductswheredraftsmightinterferewiththeiroperation.
l Neverpaintsmokealarms.Paint,stickers,orotherdecorationscouldkeepthealarmsfromworking.
l Keepmanufacturer’sinstructionsforreference.
