Recommended Smoke Detector Locations
TheNationalFireProtectionAssociation’s(NFPA)Standard72recommendsthefollowingplacementforsmoke
detectors:
►Earlywarningfiredetectionisbestachievedbytheinstallationoffiredetectionequipmentinallroomsand
areasofthehousehold.Theequipmentshouldbeinstalledasfollows:
l Asmokedetectorinstalledoutsideeachseparatesleepingarea,intheimmediatevicinityofthebedrooms
andoneachadditionalstoryofthefamilylivingunit,includingbasementsandexcludingcrawlspacesand
unfinishedattics.
l Inaddition,theNFPArecommendsthatyouinstallsmokedetectorsinthelivingroom,diningroom,
bedroom(s),kitchen,hallway(s),finishedattics,furnaceroom,utilityandstoragerooms,andattached
garages.Seetheimagesbelowforexamplesofsmokedetectorlocation.
