Emergency Evacuation Plan
Toestablishandregularlypracticeaplanofescapeintheeventoffire,thefollowingstepsarerecommendedby
theNationalFireProtectionAssociation:
1. Positionyourdetectororyourinteriorand/orexteriorsounderssothattheycanbeheardbyalloccupantsin
yourhome.
2. Determinetwomeansofescapefromeachroom.Onepathofescapeshouldleadtothedoorthatpermits
normalexitfromthebuilding.Theothershouldbeanalternateescape,suchasawindow,shouldyourpath
tothatdoorbeimpassable.Stationanescapeladderatsuchwindowsifthereisalongdroptotheground.
3. Sketchafloorplanofthebuilding.Showwindows,doors,stairs,androoftopsthatcanbeusedtoescape.
Indicateescaperoutesforeachroom.Keeptheseroutefreefromobstructionsandpostcopiesofthe
escaperoutesineveryroom.
4. Assurethatallbedroomdoorsareshutwhileyouareasleep.Thiswillpreventdeadlysmokefromentering
whileyouescape.
5. Trythedoor.Ifthedoorishot,checkyouralternateescaperoute.Ifthedooriscool,openitcautiously.Be
preparedtoslamthedoorshutifsmokeorheatrushesin.
6. Whensmokeispresent,crawlontheground.DoNOTwalkupright,sincesmokerisesandmayovercome
you.Clearerairisnearthefloor.
7. Escapequickly;don’tpanic.
8. Establishaplaceoutdoors,awayfromyourhouse,whereeveryonecanmeetandthentakestepsto
contacttheauthoritiesandaccountforthosemissing.Choosesomeonetoassurethatnobodyreturnsto
thehouse—manydiegoingback.
