This position activates the starter motor,
starting the engine.
BEFORE STARTING THE
ENGINE
O Make sure all windows and lights are
clean.
O Check fluid levels such as engine oil,
coolant, brake and clutch fluid, window
washer fluid as frequently as possible, at
least whenever you refuel.
O Check to be sure that all windows and light
lenses are clean.
O Visually inspect tires for condition. Also
check tire pressure.
O Lock all doors.
O Position seat and adjust head restraints.
O Adjust inside and outside mirrors.
O Fasten seat belts and ask all passengers to
do likewise.
O Check the operation of warning lights
when key is turned to the ‘‘ON (3)’’
position.
DRIVING WITH AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
The automatic transmission in your vehicle is
electronically controlled by a microcomputer to
produce maximum power and smooth opera-
tion.
Recommended operating procedures for this
transmission are shown on the following
pages. Follow these procedures for maximum
vehicle performance and driving enjoyment.
See ‘‘Transfer case shifting procedures’’ later
in this section.
Starting the vehicle
O After starting the engine, fully depress the
foot brake pedal and push the selector lever
button before shifting the selector lever
from ‘‘P’’ to the ‘D’’, ‘‘R’’, ‘‘2’’ or ‘1’’ position.
Be sure the vehicle is fully stopped before
