position with the vehicle stopped. The
‘‘N’’ position disengages the automatic
transmission mechanical parking lock,
which will allow the vehicle to roll unex-
pectedly. Do not leave the transfer shift
lever in ‘‘N’’.
4LO — Four wheels are driven. Use
when climbing or descending steep hills,
or during hard driving in sand, mud or
deep snow. The ‘‘4LO’’ position provides
maximum power and traction. Avoid
raising vehicle speed excessively, as
the maximum speed is approximately
30 MPH (50 km/h).
O The indicator light blinks while shift-
ing from one drive mode to the
other. It illuminates after shifting
the drive mode. If the indicator light
does not change illumination during
drive mode shifts, look around the
vehicle to check that safety is en-
sured. Set the steering wheel to the
straight-ahead position, then shift
the drive mode while accelerating or
decelerating the engine or backing
up the vehicle.
O With the shift lever set to the ‘‘4LO’’
position, set the 4WD shift switch to
either the AUTO or the LOCK posi-
tion. If the 4WD shift switch is set to
the 2WD position, moving the shift
lever to the ‘‘H’’ position will set the
drive system in the 2WD mode. This
will cause the drive system to stick.
O If the shift lever is set midway be-
tween the ‘‘H’’ and the ‘‘4LO’’ posi-
tion, the 4WD warning light will
sometimes illuminate. When this
occurs, move the shift lever to the
‘‘H’’ or ‘‘4LO’’ position.
If the key switch is turned off after
the above condition, the 4WD warn-
ing light goes out.
O Limited slip differential equipped
model:
Traction performance is high, so
when making a turn on paved roads,
vibration and tire squealing may oc-
cur.
WARNING
O If the rear wheels spin on snow-
covered roads, etc., do not at-
tempt to operate the shift lever or
4WD shift switch.
O When parking the vehicle, apply
the parking brake and shift the
transfer control lever in the ‘‘H’’
or ‘‘4LO’’ position. Do not leave
between the ‘‘H’’ and ‘‘4LO’’ po-
sitions. Otherwise, the vehicle
could roll unexpectedly even if
the automatic transmission is in
