Design and function
Heat exchanger and
aftercooler
TAMD61, -62 have one of each, whereas
TAMD71, -72 have two series-connected heat
exchangers and aftercoolers. The aftercooler(s) and
heat exchanger(s) are mounted on the right-hand side
of the engine with the heat exchanger(s) in front.
In the heat exchanger, the heat from the inner cooling
system of the engine (fresh water system) is
transferred to the outer circuit (sea water).
The aftercoolers transfer heat in the induction air from
the turbocharger to the outer circuit (sea water).
The heat exchangers consist of an aluminium housing
with a tube-type heat exchange insert.
The sea water passes through the tubes and the fresh
water (in the heat exchanger) or the induction air (in
the aftercooler) passes between the tubes.
Note: On the TAMD61, -62 and TAMD71, -72, the
heat exchangers and aftercoolers are identical. This
means that the heat exchange inserts etc. are
mutually exchangeable.
