Crack checking
Seizure damage can cause overheating cracks
which can only be discovered with special
equipment. Any cracks and notches are most reliably
found by magnetic powder testing such as
Magnaglo, i.e. fluorescent powder which is observed
in ultra-violet light. Please refer to the instructions
provided by the manufacturers of the equipment.
After such a test, the crankshaft must be de-fluxed.
Cracks of the following types and locations mean that
the crankshaft has to be replaced.
C. Cracks longer than 5 mm adjacent to oil duct
holes. Cracks which are shorter than 5 mm can
be ground off.
D. Cracks longer than 5 mm adjacent to the marked
area. Single cracks shorter than 10 mm can be
accepted.
B. Crosswise cracks within the marked area.
A. Lengthways cracks in bearing journals and
fillets.
