A. Outdoor Water Heater Location
q Outdoor water heaters must be installed outdoors.
q Protected from freezing temperatures.
B. Indoor Water Heater Location
q Close to area of vent termination.
q Indoors and protected from freezing temperatures.
C. Outdoor and Indoor Water Heater Location
q Proper clearance from combustible surfaces observed.
q Sufficient fresh air supply for proper operation of
water heater.
q Air supply free of corrosive elements and
flammable vapors.
q Provisions made to protect area from water damage.
q Sufficient room to service heater.
q Combustible materials, such as clothing, cleaning
materials, rags, etc. clear of the heater and
vent piping.
q Water heater is properly attached to the wall.
D. Water Supply
q Water supply has sufficient pressure.
q Air purged from water heater and piping.
q Water connections tight and free of leaks.
q Water filter is clean and in place.
q Materials used are as instructed in this manual.
q Water pipes are insulated and protected from
freezing.
E. Gas Supply
q Gas type matches rating plate.
q Gas supply pressure is sufficient for the water heater.
q Gas line equipped with shut-off valve, union and
sediment trap.
q Approved pipe joint compound used.
q Soap and water solution used to check all connections
and fittings for possible gas leak.
q Gas Company inspected installation (if required).
F. Relief Valve
q Pressure Relief Valve properly installed and discharge
line run to open drain.
q Discharge line protected from freezing.
G. Venting (Indoor Water Heaters Only)
q Vent pipe material should be category III and meet
UL1738 in US and ULC S636 in Canada.
q Vent connector(s) pitched (1/4” per foot of length
minimum) DOWNWARD or UPWARD to
termination. If UPWARD, a condensate trap must be
installed close to the heater. See page 14.
q Vent connector(s) securely fastened together with
high temperature silicone (500°F [
260°C])
and
air-tight.
q All vent runs are properly supported.
q Vent terminal is properly installed.
q Sufficient combustion air is available.
q Maximum and minimum vent lengths are observed.
H. Electrical Wiring
q Voltage matches rating plate.
q Water heater is properly grounded.
q Supply cord and/or wiring meets all local codes.
