5. Burning Process
Firerequiresfuel,airandheat.Ifheatisrobbedfrom
thereplace during the drying stage, the new load of
woodhasreducedthechancesforagoodcleanburn.
Alwaysburndry,seasonedrewood.
6. Creosote Formation
Whenwoodisburnedslowly,itproducestarandother
organicvaporswhichcombinewithexpelledmoisture
to form creosote. The creosote vapors condense in
the relatively cool chimney ue of a newly-started or
a slow-burning re.As a result, creosote residue ac-
cumulatesontheuelining.
When ignited, creosote creates an extremely hot re
which may damage the chimney or even destroy the
house.
Thechimneyshallbeinspected at least annually be-
forelighting,oronceeverytwomonthsduringheating
season.
Whencreosotehasaccumulateditshallberemovedto
reducetheriskofachimneyre.
7. Processed Solid Fuel Firelogs
Manufacturedrelogsmaybeusedwiththisreplace.
Hearth&HomeTechnologiesrecommendstheuseof
ULClassiedprocessedfuelrelogs.Followthemanu-
facturer’slightingandsafetyinstructions.
Usingrelogsmayrequiremorefrequentchimney in-
spectionsandcleaning.
Donotpokeorstirthelogswhiletheyareburning.Use
only relogs that have been evaluated for the appli-
cation in manufactured replaces and refer to relog
warningsand caution markings on packaging prior to
use.
3. Seasoning
Seasonedrewoodisnothingmorethanwoodthatis
cuttosize,splitandairdriedtoamoisturecontentof
around20%.Thetimeittakestoseasonwoodvaries
fromaroundninemonthsforsoftwoodstoaslongas
eighteenmonthsforhardwoods.Thekeytoseasoning
woodistobesureithasbeensplit,exposingthewet
interiorandincreasingthesurfaceareaofeachpiece.
A tree that was cut down a year ago and not split is
likelytohavealmostashighamoisturecontentnowas
itdidwhenitwascut.

• Airdrytoamoisturecontentofaround20%
- Softwood-aboutninemonths
- Hardwood-abouteighteenmonths

4. Storing Wood
Splittingwoodbeforeit is stored reducesdryingtime.
Thefollowingguidelinewillensureproperlyseasoned
wood:
• Stackthewoodtoallowairtocirculatefreelyaround
andthroughthewoodpile.
• Elevate the woodpile off the ground to allow air
circulationunderneath.
• Thesmallerthepieces,thefasterthedryingprocess.
Anypieceover6in.(152mm)indiametershouldbe
split.
• Woodshouldbestackedsothatbothendsofeach
pieceareexposedtoair,sincemoredryingoccurs
throughthecutendsthanthesides.Thisistrueeven
withwoodthathasbeensplit.
• Storewoodundercover,suchasinashed,orcovered
withatarp,plastic,tarpaper,sheetsofscrapplywood,
etc.,asuncoveredwoodcanabsorbwaterfromrain
or snow, delaying the seasoning process.Avoid
covering the sides and ends completely. Doing so
maytrapmoisturefromthegroundandimpedeair
circulation.
D. First Fire
Beforelightingyourrstreinthereplace,makecertain
that:
• refractoryisinplace
• alllabelshavebeenremoved.
