Thefollowingtasksmaybeperformedannuallybythe
homeowner.Ifyouareuncomfortableperforminganyof

vice appointment.
A. Chimney Inspection
Frequency: Asnecessary;atleastannuallybefore
lightingreplace,oronceeverytwomonthsduring
heatingseason.
By: Homeowner/ChimneySweep
• Confirm that termination cap remains clear and
unobstructed.
• Inspectforblockagessuchasbirdnests,leaves,etc.
• Inspectforcorrosionorseparation.
• Inspectforcreosoteandremoveasneeded,atleast
everytwomonthsduringtheheatingseason.
• Inspectthesystematthereplaceconnectionand
atthechimneytop.
Inthe event of a chimney re, Hearth& HomeTech-
nologiesrecommendsreplacementofthechimneyand
inspectionoftheadjacentstructuretotheprovisionsof
NFPALevelIIIinspectioncriteria.

Check:
• conditionofdoors,surroundsandfronts
• conditionofglassandglassassembly
• obstructionsofcombustionandventilationair
• obstructionsofterminationcap
Clean:
• glass
• airpassageways,grilles

B. Creosote (Chimney) Cleaning
Frequency: Asneeded;atleastannuallybeforelight-
ing,oronceeverytwomonthsduringheatingseason.
Whencreosotehasaccumulateditshallberemoved
toreducetheriskofachimneyre.

Tools Needed:Brush,allenwrench,Phillipsscrew-
driver
• When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and
otherorganicvapors,whichcombinewithexpelled
moisture to form creosote.The creosote vapors
condense in the relatively cool chimney ue of a
slow-burning fire.As a result, creosote residue
accumulates on the ue lining. When ignited, this
creosotemakesanextremelyhotre.
• Removeallashfromthereboxandextinguishall
hot embers before disposal.Allowthe replace to
coolcompletely.
• Closethedoortightly.
• Removethetopoftheterminationcapasshownin
Figure4.1tocleanthecapandchimney.
• Thecreosoteorsootshouldberemovedfromthe
chimneywithabrush specically designedforthe
sizeofchimneyinuse.
• Reinstallterminationcap.
• Cleanoutfallendebrisfromtherebox.
