DVD Recorder/VHS Hi-Fi Combo
For those with a collection of VHS
recordings that they would like to
continue using or to archive onto
DVD, JVC offers the DR-MV5S, which
combines all of the features of the
DR-M100S DVD recorder (previous
page) with a VHS Hi-Fi VCR featuring
JVC’s VHS Progressive Scan and a one-touch intelligent dubbing system between the VHS and DVD sections for easy
archiving and editing. The dubbing system includes three new features: auto record speed optimizer which calculates the
total recording time on the VHS tape and then automatically selects the most suitable recording speed for dubbing to
DVD; auto thumbnail creation which automatically creates video thumbnail chapter references when dubbing to DVD
based on the number of recordings on the tape; and auto blank-cut dubbing that eliminates blank space between
recordings on the tape being dubbed when recording to DVD or HDD.
The DR-MV5S includes twin tuners that allow DVD and VHS recording to be performed separately or simultaneously from
different TV channels. The live memory feature when using DVD-RAM allows simultaneous recording and playback. In
addition, VHS playback is possible during DVD recording, and DVD playback is possible during VHS recording.
Twin tuners in the DR-MV5S allows tape
recording and DVD recording to be done
separately. You can record programs from
different channels simultaneously onto
DVD and VHS tape.
The benefit of progressive flickerless and
high picture quality images for DVD is now
available for VHS via the unified progressive
component output on the DR-MV5S
VHS Progressive scan allows VHS playback in
480p. The result is an image with improved
edge detail, less flicker and higher density.
VHS Progressive also allows VHS signals to
pass from the deck to the TV using the same
outputs used by the DVD. As a result, the
DR-MV5S requires only a single cable to
connect to a TV. Playback is easier, too,
because with VHS and DVD connected to
the same TV input, there’s no confusion
about which input selects which source.
Pictures from VHS tapes can look better than
the original because the Time Base Corrector
effectively reduces jitter contained in the
original images during the recording process.

One-Touch Expert Dubbing (VHS DVD)
The DR-MV5 comes with “One-Touch Expert Dubbing” button. Simply press the button, and the unit starts
VHS-to-DVD dubbing with the following advanced functions:
1) Auto Thumbnail Creation Dubbing: The JVC recorder automatically creates thumbnails by detecting the
tape-encoded signals that indicate program changes. This allows easy access to each dubbed program.
2) Auto Blank-Cut Dubbing: The unit skips any blank space on the tape. This results in DVD discs free of the
unwanted blank spaces typically seen between VHS-recorded programs.
3) Auto Recording Mode Optimizer: Press and hold the One-Touch Expert Button for 2 seconds, and the
unit automatically selects the optimum bit rate to ensure the best picture quality possible while precisely
fitting the whole content to a 4.7GB disc. Dubbed pictures are free of unwanted blank space.
