PRECAUTIONS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING * Please keep this manual in a safe place for future reference. WARNING Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, shortcircuiting, damages, fire or other hazards.
Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modifications to the instrument, or data that is lost or destroyed. Always turn the power off when the instrument is not in use. Even when the power switch is in standby status, electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. Make sure to discard used batteries according to local regulations.
Setting Up Be sure to do the following operations BEFORE turning on the power. Introduction Power Requirements Although the instrument will run either from an optional AC adaptor or batteries, Yamaha recommends use of an AC adaptor whenever possible. An AC adaptor is more environmentally friendly than batteries and does not deplete resources. Using an AC Power Adaptor 1 Make sure that the [ ] (Standby/On) switch of the instrument is off (the power indicator located to the left of the switch is off).
Setting Up Make sure to properly connect all external devices you are using (as shown below) BEFORE turning the power on. Connecting Headphones or an Audio Device (PHONES/OUTPUT Jack) NOTE • Make sure that the power is OFF when connecting or disconnecting the Footswitch or the Foot Pedal. • Do not turn the power on while pressing the Footswitch or the Foot Pedal. Otherwise, the switch or pedal type (on/off) will be reversed.

Selecting & Playing Voices Reference Selecting Voices 1 Press one of the Voice buttons. NOTE To familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the Voices, listen to the Voice Demo Songs for each Voice (page 12). Two different Voices are assigned to each Voice button. You can switch between them by pressing the [VARIATION] button.
Selecting & Playing Voices Combining Voices (Dual) You can play Voices simultaneously across the entire range of the keyboard. In this way, you can combine similar Voices to create a thicker sound. 1 Press two Voice buttons simultaneously to engage Dual. NOTE Dual mode cannot be used with two Voices of the single Voice button (for example, strings and vibraphone).
Listening to the Voice Demo Songs The instrument features special Voice Demo Songs that effectively showcase each of the Voices. 1 While holding down the [DEMO] button, press one of the Voice buttons to start the Voice Demo Song. The Songs provided for each Voice will play back in sequence. NOTE Refer to the Voice list on page 10 for more information on the characteristics of each preset Voice. NOTE The Voice Demo Songs are not transmitted via MIDI.
Listening to the Piano Demo Songs The instrument provides Piano Demo Songs as well as Voice Demo Songs, for your listening pleasure. 1 While holding down the [DEMO] button, press one of the 1 – 10 (C#1 – A#1) keys to start the desired Song. The Piano Demo Songs are assigned to the 1 – 10 (C#1 – A#1) keys. The selected Piano Preset Song will play back followed by the rest of the Songs in sequence. NP-31 NP-11 C#1 A#1 NOTE You can play the keyboard along with the Piano Demo Song.
Using the Metronome This instrument features a built-in metronome (a device that keeps an accurate tempo) that is convenient for practicing. 1 Press the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button to start the Metronome. 2 Press the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button to stop the Metronome. Setting the Beat While holding down the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, use the BEAT [<] button or the BEAT [>] button to select the Beat from 0, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The first Beat is accented with a bell sound and the rest with clicks.
Using the Metronome Also, while holding down the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, use the following keys to increase or decrease in single or ten steps. Increasing the tempo value in steps of one: While holding down the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, press the F#2 key. Decreasing the tempo value in steps of one: While holding down the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, press the E2 key. Increasing the tempo value in steps of ten: While holding down the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, press the G2 key.
Other Settings Adding Variations to the Sound – Reverb This control enables you to select four different types of reverb effect that add extra depth and expression to the sound to create a realistic acoustic ambience. Key Reverb Type Description C2 Room This setting adds a continuous reverb effect to the sound, similar to the acoustic reverberation you would hear in a room. C#2 Hall1 For a “bigger” reverb sound, use the HALL 1 setting.
Other Settings Transposing the Pitch The Transpose function makes it possible to shift the pitch of the entire keyboard up or down in semitone intervals to facilitate playing in difficult key signatures, and to let you easily match the pitch of the keyboard to the range of a singer or other instruments. For example, if you set the transposition amount to “+5,” playing a C key actually produces a pitch of F.
Other Settings Touch Sensitivity You can adjust the volume level that changes depending on how fast or strong you hit the keys. The following four settings are available. Key Touch Sensitivity Description FIXED The volume level does not change at all regardless of whether you play the keyboard soft or hard. A#5 SOFT The volume level does not change much when you play the keyboard soft or hard. B5 MEDIUM This is the standard piano touch response (default setting).
Connecting MIDI Instruments The instrument features MIDI IN/OUT terminals, allowing you to connect the instrument to other instruments and devices—including computers—and take advantage of the various performance and recording capabilities in MIDI applications. Connecting to the MIDI [IN] [OUT] terminals MIDI [IN] [OUT] terminals Use MIDI cables to connect external MIDI devices to these connectors.
MIDI Functions While holding down the [DEMO] button, press and hold the [METRONOME ON/OFF] button, then press the appropriate key indicated in the list below to make detailed adjustments to the MIDI settings. Troubleshooting Problem The instrument does not turn on. Possible Cause and Solution The instrument has not been plugged in properly. Securely insert the female plug into the jack on the instrument, and the male plug into a proper AC outlet (page 7). The batteries are low or dead. Replace all six batteries with completely new alkaline ones, or use the optional AC adaptor. Noise is heard from the speakers or headphones.
