1 Connect the speakers Surround speaker R L Front speaker R L Caution: • Remove the AC power cord of this unit from the power outlet before connecting the speakers. • Generally speaker cables consist of two parallel insulated cables. One of these cables is a different color, or has a line running along it, to indicate different polarity.
2 Connect a TV Video input to this unit is output to a TV using output jacks of the same kind. When you have made connections using different types of video such as HDMI and component video, make the same connection with your TV. When viewing, be sure to switch the input source on your TV to match the playback device.
3 Connect playback device such as BD/DVD players and recorders If your playback device has multiple audio/video outputs, connect with the following priority (A to D) to enjoy a higher quality sounds and images.
5 Set up speaker parameters When you finish connecting, adjust the status, size, and volume of each speaker so that the output is normal. These effects will be brought to you with ideal speaker positioning and connections in your listening environment. ■ Surround left and right speakers Speaker channels and functions The surround speakers are for effect and vocal sounds with the 5.1-channel speakers providing reararea sounds.

Select the V-AUX input to use these connected devices. This receiver can transmit selected incoming analog audio/video signals to external devices through the AV OUT and AUDIO OUT jacks.
CONNECTIONS Connecting the FM/AM antennas An indoor FM antenna and an AM loop antenna are included with this receiver. Connect these antennas properly to their respective jacks. AM loop antenna Position the AM antenna away from the receiver. The wires of the AM antenna have no polarity. You can connect either wire to the AM jack or the GND jack.

To adjust the sound effects suitable for acoustical conditions of audio/video sources or rooms, perform the following operations.

Cause Remedy See page This unit is in straight decoding mode and a monaural source is being played back. Press gSTRAIGHT (on the remote control) to exit straight decoding mode. 27 Sound may not be output from certain channels depending on input sources or sound field programs. Try another sound field program. 26 A subwoofer is not connected, or it is disabled.
APPENDIX Troubleshooting Tuner (FM/AM) FM AM Problem FM stereo reception is noisy. Cause You are too far from the station transmitter, or the input from the antenna is weak. Remedy See page Check the antenna connections. 21 Switch to monaural mode. 31 Replace the outdoor antenna with a more sensitive multi-element antenna. — Adjust the antenna height or orientation, or place it in a different location. — There is distortion, and clear reception cannot be obtained even with a good FM antenna.

Precautions This unit is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if this unit itself is turned off. In this state, this unit is designed to consume a very small quantity of power. For U.K. customers If the socket outlets in the home are not suitable for the plug supplied with this appliance, it should be cut off and an appropriate 3 pin plug fitted. Installing the speakers Wall-mounting the speakers Front speakers: Place the two front speakers on the left and right sides of the TV, at approximately the same height as the TV, facing directly forward. 1 Install screws into a solid wall or wall support as shown below. Use 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8") diameter self-tapping screws. Surround speakers: Place the left and right surround speakers behind your listening position, facing slightly inward.
Connecting the speakers Caution: Make sure the power cables for the subwoofer and your other AV components are disconnected from the AC wall outlets before making any connections.
■ Operating the speaker terminals Positive (+) 1 3 2 Note: Make sure the terminal is gripping the bare wire, not the insulation. 1 2 3 Press and hold the terminal tab. 4 Test the security of the connection by pulling gently on the cable. Connect each speaker to the appropriate speaker terminals on your amplifier by using the cables you prepared earlier. See the “Connection diagram” on page 3 for reference.
• If you replace the front speakers (NS-B285) with other speakers, you will need to re-adjust the subwoofer’s volume. • The frequency characteristics graphs below show how the subwoofer and front speakers work together to provide a full-range sound.
