Why call the tire Defender
®
?
The MICHELIN
®
LTX
®
tires have been one of our strongest-selling
lines since they rst launched more than 20 years ago. LTX
®
has
since become synonymous with light trucks, long-lasting treadlife
and all-season versatility. Likewise, the MICHELIN
®
Defender
®
has
gained a reputation for unsurpassed longevity.
The Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S name is a natural combination of the
heritage of the LTX
®
M/S and the longevity of Defender
®
. Using
a family name also helps clarify and simplify tire choices for your
shoppers. The Premier
®
family of tires delivers maximum safety
with a luxurious ride. The PILOT
®
family of tires offers outstanding
sport performance. And the Defender
®
family of tires provides
outstanding treadlife.
Why will the MICHELIN
®
Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S be available in
some passenger sizes (like 215/55R16 XL)?
Michelin is extending the Defender
®
line to drivers of car-derived
vans such as the Ford Transit Connect. These vehicles use
dimensions typically found on passenger cars, but they have a
need for a more robust product. The Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S will
meet that need better than any tire in our portfolio. Note that
these tires will be priced higher than overlapping dedicated
passenger tires to help prevent misuse on cars. Please refer to
launch documents for the full list of sizes and ideal tments.
Why will the MICHELIN
®
Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S be available in
some luxury crossover sizes?
The Premier
®
LTX
®
should remain the primary line for crossovers, as
it is better suited to provide the ideal ride and comfort associated
with crossovers. The Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S will be offered in several
dimensions overlapping with the Premier
®
LTX
®
to give consumers
a choice. The Premier
®
family of tires delivers a luxury ride and
maximum safety, and the Defender
®
family of tires provides
maximum treadlife, all-season condence and fuel efciency.

look identical. What is the difference?
The primary difference is in the compound. The new advanced
EverTread
compound allows the Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S to hold up
to tougher conditions longer.* The result is better chip and tear
resistance in E-metric sizes, as well as improved high-severity
wear in LT-metric sizes.
If the compound is better, why is Michelin reducing
the warranty in LT-metric sizes?
There are two reasons. First and most important, Michelin
does not want to publish a warranty that is not within our
conservative estimate for treadlife. LT-metric tires are subjected
to an extremely high level of wear and tear due to both daily use
and the output of torque from modern ¾- and 1-ton trucks. The
70,000-mile warranty was valid for the LTX
®
M/S
2
, but heavy-
duty trucks (such as Ford F-250/350, Ram 2500/3500 and GM
2500/3500) have seen a dramatic increase in overall torque since
the 2009 launch of the LTX
®
M/S
2
(600 lb/ft to 850 lb/ft).
The Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S will boast the longest-lasting, toughest
compound available from Michelin to ensure a continued
reputation as the industry leader in treadlife. Note that the
E-metric sizes have the same warranty, but the UTQG treadwear
rating has increased from 720 to 800.
The second reason for the warranty decrease is simply that most
competitive warranties in LT-metric sizes are either at or below
50,000 miles. So even at 50,000 miles, the Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S
warranty is still competitive with any other warranty. More
importantly, it will provide increased wear life in severe conditions
when compared to the already successful MICHELIN
®
LTX
®
M/S

.
Will Michelin launch a derivative line?
Yes. Michelin launched the MICHELIN
®
X
®
LT A/S to meet the
needs of our club customers as well as market needs abroad.
The tire will have tread design and compounds identical to the
Defender
®
LTX
®
M/S. Sizes will be entirely E-metric (no LT-metric).
The tire will be available in 12 sizes from 15" to 20".
