ZAR
®
Deck & Siding Semi-Transparent Stain is a stain and sealer in one. It
is a unique blend of oils, and finely ground translucent pigments that penetrate
deeply to enhance the natural beauty of the wood. Apply to all types of woods,
even premium-grade lumbers.
This unique formula rejuvenates the wood and provides long-lasting sun
protection, repels water, excellent color retention, and mold, mildew, and algae
resistant on the dry paint film. It will not peel or crack.
USES: For all new, old, and pressure-treated unpainted wood surfaces such as
decks, siding, docks, shakes and shingles, fences, and log homes where color
retention, water repellents, and wood conditioning are the desired goal.
BEFORE YOU START: Test stain choice for color absorbency, the wood must
have a moisture content 20% or lower as determined by a moisture meter. To
determine if wood is ready to stain, sprinkle a few drops of water, if the water
easily absorbs into the wood, proceed. If not, wait 3-4 months and retest. Do not
pre-treat or use a water-repellent preservative. Do not apply over clear finishes.
SURFACE PREPARATION: Read “Before You Start.” The surface must be
clean, dry, and in good condition. Remove all mildew, dirt, loose wood fibers, oil,
and grease. Repair or replace any loose, cracked, or warped boards.
All mildew (dark, fuzzy or powdery deposits) must be removed with the following
solution: 1/3 cup heavy-duty laundry detergent to 1-quart household bleach to 3
quarts of warm water. Apply with a scrubbing brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow
to dry before staining. Wear protective eye goggles and waterproof gloves when
handling cleaning solution.
For Grayed Wood Exposed to UV (Sunlight): Lightly sand or power wash the
surface to remove degraded wood fibers. Clean surface as above. Always allow
the wood to dry thoroughly after power washing and before the application of
the stain.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust.
LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS,
SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN
SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator to control
lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you
start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
APPLICATION: Apply when air and surface temperatures are 40
o
F (4
o
C) or
above. Do not thin. STIR THOROUGHLY before and during use. Do not apply
if rain is expected within 24 hours. Test ZAR
®
Deck & Siding Semi-Transparent
Stain on an inconspicuous area to determine the final color. Spray application is
acceptable, but application with a synthetic brush or roller with a small nap cover
is recommended. If sprayed, the coating should be dry brushed or back rolled
for color uniformity. Always apply in the direction of the wood’s grain. Apply one
coat. More is not better. The stain needs to penetrate the wood, not build up on
the surface. Brush out any puddles before clean up. On vertical surfaces, start
at the top on several boards and apply continuously across to a break at a door,
window, or corner. Be sure to maintain a wet edge.
CLEAN UP: Clean application tools immediately after use with mineral spirits.
DRYING TIME: Allow 24-48 hours dry time. If a second coat is desired, wait 3
hours between coats. Cold and/or damp weather will affect curing time. Dry time
will vary depending upon porosity of the surface, temperature, and humidity.
COVERAGE: Smooth surfaces, 300–400 square feet per gallon. Rough
surfaces, 100–200 square feet per gallon.
MAINTENANCE: Reapply at 2-4 year intervals for vertical surfaces and 1-3
years on horizontal surfaces. Areas with harsh exposure to the sun, weather, or
foot traffic will show wear more quickly than other surfaces.
CAUTION: Keep away from heat and flame. Use only with adequate
ventilation. Ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. If you
experience eye watering, headache or dizziness or if air monitoring demonstrates
vapor levels are above applicable limits, wear an appropriate, properly fitted
respirator (NIOSH approved) during and after application. Follow respirator
manufacturer’s directions for respirator use. Wash thoroughly after handling.
First Aid: If you experience difficulty in breathing, leave the area to obtain fresh
air. If continued difficulty is experienced, call poison control center, hospital
emergency room, or physician immediately.
If spilled, contain spilled material and remove with inert absorbent. Dispose of
contaminated absorbent, container and unused contents in accordance with
local, state, and federal regulations.
