.DESCRIPTION AND USES .
Zinsser
®
WaterTite Chalky Surface Sealer is a proprietary
blend of acrylic polymers designed to bind and prime
chalky surfaces and improve paint adhesion found on
weathered stucco, concrete, brick, plaster and a variety of
painted surfaces. WaterTite Chalky Surface Sealer also
protects porous concrete and masonry, medium and
normal weight block, rough stucco, non-glazed concrete
brick and other comparably porous materials from the
damaging effects of water absorption, freeze-thaw
damage, dusting and staining. WaterTite Chalky Surface
Sealer penetrates and protects the substrate and is highly
permeable to water vapor.

.PRODUCT APPLICATION .
SURFACE PREPARATION
WaterTite Chalky Surface Sealer can be applied to most
dense concrete surfaces that are clean, unsealed and
free of dirt, waxes and oils and sound. New concrete must
cure for at least 28 days prior to coating.
Test the openness of the substrate by sprinkling with
water. If the surface turns dark with the water WaterTite
Chalky Surface Sealer can be applied. If the water beads
up or does not turn dark, the surface must be chemically
or mechanically cleaned and retest before proceeding.
Clean the surface by an appropriate method to remove all
loose foreign matter that could interfere with application or
performance of the coating. Allow pressure washed
surfaces to dry three days prior to coating. Remove
exterior mildew with Jomax
®
Mold & Mildew Stain
Remover or equivalent. Remove efflorescence with
sulfamic acid or dilute muriatic acid. Spot cleaning with
acid may cause uneven porosity and blotchy appearance.
Surfaces can be slightly damp at the time of application.
Surfaces of concrete and mortar joints must be hard and
firm, not loose or sandy. The surface is considered to be
unsound if it can be scraped or gouged with a flat
screwdriver. Unsound mortar or deteriorated concrete
should be removed and repaired prior to coating. Cracks
and joints must be sealed with flexible sealant. Parapet
walls must be capped and backside sealed with a
waterproofing membrane. Protect adjacent and underlying
surfaces from overspray and rundown.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-Approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.
APPLICATION
WaterTite Chalky Surface Sealer is ready-to-use, no
thinning is required. Surface can be slightly damp but not
wet at the time of the application. In hot weather, where
possible, lightly spray the surface with water to cool the
surface to prevent flash drying. Apply only when air,
material, and surface temperatures are between 50-90ºF
(10-32ºC) and the relative humidity is or less than 85%. To
form a continuous, pinhole free coating, apply evenly and
thoroughly. It can be applied by a garden sprayer but is
best applied by low-pressure airless spray. Use a small to
medium size airless pump set with a pressure of 1500 psi
using a 0.019-0.025” tip. Hold the spray tip 12-18 inches
from the surface. Start at the bottom of the wall and work
upward with an overlapping horizontal spray pattern. Take
special care to saturate mortar joints. Do not stop or
interrupt the application in the middle of the wall. Stop
application only at expansion joints, walls or breaks
defined with masking tape.
Back rolling is recommended to prevent streaking on
dense substrates and to smooth lap marks. WaterTite
Chalky Surface Sealer has a slight milky-white
appearance when applied but dries clear. Material that is
not absorbed should be back rolled or brushed out to
avoid build up. Do not allow puddles, drips or runs to dry
of the surface. WaterTite Chalky Surface Sealer may
slightly darken the surface and add a slight sheen.
DRY & RECOAT
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative
humidity. Lower temperatures and higher humidity will
increase dry time. Air circulation will aid drying. Higher
surface temperatures will significantly speed drying and
extra caution is required to avoid excess material, drips or
runs from drying on the surface. Excess material allowed
to dry on the surface may turn cloudy if cured at too low or
too high of temperature. Chalky Surface Sealer will dry to
the touch in 2 and can be recoated in 2 hours. Protect
from rain for 24 and dew for 12 hours after application.
