This pedestal is inspired by a Baroque stand for garden statuary in an early 18th-century book of English and French garden designs held in Colonial Williamsburg’s collections. When the original design was engraved, such pedestals might have shown off a piece of sculpture brought home from the Grand Tour or a prized piece of Chinese porcelain.
