Description

Even though it's a native tree, the Pawpaw looks like it belongs in the tropics. Its deep green, drooping, oval leaves are a foot long and about 4 in. W. The fruit of this tree has a tropical character, too. The green, 3 in. to 5 in., oblong pawpaw fruits darken late in the fall, usually right after the first frost, and taste like a custard made of bananas and mangoes. Pick them and eat them fast. They have a short shelf life, which is why you will likely never see them in a grocery store. They are absolutely delicious and full of nutrients like potassium, amino acids, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, phosphorus and zinc. At least 2 plants are needed for pollination.
