Color Management Overview 1-13
ICC Profiles
The International Color Consortium (ICC) has defined a high-
quality, extendible, and interchangeable color profile format.
The format is based on the Apple ColorSync 1.0 profile format.
The ICC color profiles are described in a platform-independent
format and can be used to translate color data created on one
device into another devices native color space.
The latest implementations and the acceptance of the ICC color
profile standard allow the following:
End users can transparently move profiles and images with
embedded profiles across different locations, operating sys-
tems, and applications
Device manufacturers can create a single color profile for
multiple operating systems
The ICC specification uses three basic profile types:
Input profiles, associated with input devices such as
scanners
Display profiles, associated with display devices such as
monitors
Output profiles, associated with output devices such as
printers
