HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP operating system configuration guide: SGI IRIX (A5951-96075, December 2005)

Partitioning and l
abeling the devices
After new device r
ecognition has been veried, partition the new SCSI disk devices
using the fx utili
ty. When the disk array is connected through a fabric switch, you must
specify the dev i
ce le when starting the fx utilit y. After setting the partitions for a device,
verify the part
itions using the prtv toc command.
The IRIX system controls disk devices using partitions. One LUN can be divided into a
maximum of sixteen partitions (primary par tition 0 through 15). The m a ximum capacity
per partition is not limited. Partitions 8 (vh) and 9 are reserved and are used for storing
disk m anagement information. Partition 10 is also reserved. Therefore, the number of
available partitions per device is thirteen (0 to 7 and 11 to 15).
CAUTION:
Do not partit
ion or label the D ata E xchange (DE) devices. This will prevent the DE
software fr
om accessing the device. These devices must be installed and accessed
as raw devices.
To partition a nd label the devices:
1. Use the fx utility to create and label the partitions for each new OPEN-x logical unit.
