Licensing Information
Licensing for DSS version 5.0x.xx is the same as it was for earlier 4.x, 4.25.xx and 4.91.xx versions.
Licenses are still node locked to a server MAC address and can only be used on a server with the MAC
address for which they were locked.
The DSS code downloaded from hp.com is a production version of the code that contains a trial license
that is good for 50 devices for up to 60 days. Keying in a license that has been purchased will cancel the
trial license. There is no way to change a trial license to accommodate more seats or to last longer than
the 60 day trial period. A customer must have purchased and received licenses before the trial period
ends or they will experience a period of time when the software is unusable. Since delivery times for
licenses can vary on many factors, purchased licenses must be ordered well in advance of the end of the
trial period to ensure there is no time when there will be no licenses available.
Licenses currently being used in DSS 4.x, 4.25.xx or 4.9x systems can be used on 5.0x.xx systems. If the
5.01.xx code runs on the same server (same MAC address) as the previous DSS version then the same
license key code can be used in the 5.01.xx software. If a license is to be used for a 5.0x.xx system that
has a different MAC address than the one the license had been locked to, then the license must be
transferred, or rehosted, to the new MAC address.
Two supported devices auto generate a license when they are added to DSS 5. These are the pre-
FutureSmart digital senders: the HP 9200C and HP 9250C. All other device models require a purchased
license in order to be managed by DSS.
Starting in December 2013 there are changes to licensing including how to activate licenses and how to
rehost licenses (move a license from one MAC address to another). Please see the white paper ‘Digital
Sending Software License Activation and Rehosting’ for more detail.
Upgrading and Migrating from previous DSS Versions
White papers are available to describe the upgrade and migration processes from older DSS versions.
Upgrade refers to the installation of DSS 5 over the top of a previous DSS version on the existing DSS
server. Migration describes the process of capturing configuration information from a previous version
of DSS on one server and moving the data to a DSS 5 instance on another server. Upgrades are only
available when the exiting server has an operating system supported by DSS 5. The whitepapers
describing this process can be found at www.hp.com/support/dss5.
