HP Matrix Operating Environment 7.3 Update 1 Installation and Configuration Guide for Provisioning with Virtual Resources

Changing the Daily System Identification time
By default, HP SIM creates a "Daily System Identification" task which executes automatically at
4:05 PM. To minimize conflicts with discovery tasks and with normal operations, this task should
be scheduled to execute at a time when most systems are likely to be operational (such as, not
during a maintenance window), but when other scheduled tasks and operational procedures are
not likely to execute.
To change the time at which the "Daily System Identification" task executes:
1. Go to Tasks & LogsView All Scheduled Tasks.
2. Select the Daily System Identification task.
3. Click Edit.
4. Click Schedule.
5. Change the time and then click Done.
Defining discovery tasks
In HP SIM, define a set of discovery tasks to use later during the setup and configuration process.
Discovery should be performed incrementally and in the order described. Specifically discover the
OA first, and then the other managed systems.
HP recommends the use of Discover a group of systems option instead of Discover a single system
even when there is only one server to discover. If the server IP address is changed later and you
need to modify the discovery task, if you select the Discover a single system option, you will need
to re-enter the credential even if it is not changed. When you select the Discover a group of systems
option, the previously entered credentials continue working for the new IP addresses.
NOTE: Discovering everything at the same time can cause a difficult diagnostic situation. HP
recommends that you not use the Automatic Discovery task that was predefined for the entire
network. If you have a set of IP ranges to be discovered automatically, make sure to exclude the
CMS alternative IP address.
NOTE: HP recommends setting no more than three credentials for each discovery task. This is to
reduce the chance of account lockout when an inappropriate credential is tried too many times
against one of the servers in the group. You might need to group the discovery tasks by credentials
to accommodate this recommendation.
To define a set of discovery tasks:
Prepare for system discovery
1. Before performing the discovery tasks that follow, ensure all management processors and
servers are properly configured in DNS.
2. If you plan to discover VMware ESXi 5.0 and above host servers with lockdown mode enabled:
a. Open OptionDiscoveryConfigure general settings.
b. Select the Automatically discover VMware ESX host server in lockdown enabled mode
checkbox.
c. Click OK.
3. Create a privileged user account remmgr on each of the VMware ESXi 4.x hosts that need
to be managed by vCenter 4.x in lockdown enabled mode.
NOTE: If a VMware ESXi 4.x host is managed by VMware vCenter 4.x in a lockdown mode,
these hosts cannot be monitored and managed by providing the root credentials — the
privileged user account remmgr is required. The remmgr user must have root account privileges.
Use the remmgr user credentials to discover and identify those hosts.
Complete all the options below that apply to your environment.
