Burroughs Point-to-Point Protocol.
Burroughs Point-to-Point Protocol. A protocol that enables an application process to act as
a station in a Burroughs dedicated point-to-point contention network.
byte-synchronous data transmission (BISYNC). A data communications environment in
which stations synchronize with each other by means of synchronous idle (SYN)
characters. The stations communicate by using a standard set of control characters and
control character sequences. The different BISYNC environments supported by the
Envoy subsystem are differentiated by their selection and use of control characters.
CLIP. See communications line interface processor (CLIP)
.
communications line interface processor (CLIP). The major programmable device within
the SWAN concentrator, providing link-level protocol and a software interface to the
server. The CLIP stores and implements specific communications protocols. There are
three CLIPs on one SWAN concentrator. Each CLIP contains a Motorola MC68EN360
quad integrated communications controller (QUICC) chip. Each CLIP interfaces to both
the A and B Ethernet ports and has two WAN ports.
concentrator manager (ConMgr) process. See ConMgr process
.
ConMgr process. The concentrator manager (ConMgr) process is provided as part of the
WAN subsystem. The ConMgr process runs in each system processor that supports
WAN DEVICE objects and provides management functions to the WAN subsystem and
the IOPs. These functions include downloading data link control (DLC) tasks to the
CLIPs on the SWAN concentrator and selecting the preferred path for the DLC tasks.

, data link control (DLC) task, and communications line
interface processor (CLIP).
continuous polling. This type of polling specifies that the tributary stations included in the
address list are to be polled continuously in a round-robin fashion until a station
responds to the poll or until the HALTPOLL procedure is called.
control and inquiry. Those aspects of Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) object management
related to the state or configuration of an object. Such aspects include actions that affect
the state or configuration of an object, inquiries about the object, and commands
pertaining to the session environment (for example, commands that set default values for
the session).
CRC. Cyclical redundancy check. A technique for checking the validity of a multiple-byte
block of data. If one CRC does not match the one previously generated, an error exists
somewhere within the block of data. See also frame check sequence.
CTS. Clear to send. A signal that comes from a modem, indicating to the computer
equipment that the modem is ready to accept data for transmission.
data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). Equipment that provides all the functions
required to establish, maintain, and terminate a connection and that provides the signal
conversion and coding between the data terminal equipment (DTE) and telephone
company lines or data circuits. A DCE is usually a modem.
