Guardian
Guardian. An environment available for interactive or programmatic use with the NonStop™
Kernel. Processes that run in the Guardian environment use the Guardian system
procedure calls as their application program interface.
half-duplex. A method of serial communications in which the data flow between two points
can occur in only one direction at a time. This concept refers to the physical capability
of the line.
high PIN. A PIN that is greater than 255. See also low PIN.
intermediate text block (ITB). In byte-synchronous communications, a control character
used to terminate an intermediate block of characters. The block check character is sent
immediately following ITB, but no line turnaround occurs. The response following end-
of-text block (ETB) or end of text (ETX) also applies to all of the ITB checks
immediately preceding the block terminated by ETB or ETX.
IOP. See I/O process
I/O process. A privileged process, residing in a NonStop system processor, that provides an
application program interface (API) that allows you to access an input-output (I/O)
interface. A WAN line is an I/O interface. Running program (part of the operating
system) that manages the input and output functions for the SWAN concentrator. Envoy
is an input-output process controlling a byte-synchronous or asynchronous
communications line.
IP address. An address that identifies a specific host to the internet protocol (IP). An IP
address consists of two parts: a network address, which identifies the network, and a
local address, which identifies a host within a network. A network address is
concatenated with a host address to form the IP address and uniquely identify a host
within a network. IP routes data between source and destination IP addresses.
ITB. See intermediate text block (ITB).
Katakana character set. A character set of symbols used in one of the two common
Japanese phonetic alphabets, Katakana is used primarily to write foreign words
phonetically.
LAN. See local area network (LAN)
.
LANMAN. See LAN manager (LANMAN) process.
LAN manager (LANMAN) process. The process provided as part of the ServerNet local
area network (LAN) systems access (SLSA) subsystem that starts and manages the
SLSA subsystem objects and the LAN monitor (LANMON) process and assigns
ownership of Ethernet adapters to the LANMON processes in the system. Subsystem
Control Facility (SCF) commands are directed to the LANMON processes for
configuring and managing the SLSA subsystem and the Ethernet adapters.
local area network (LAN). A network that is located in a small geographical area and whose
communications technology provides a high-bandwidth, low-cost medium to which
